I cover structural design, construction technology and building materials.

The rate analysis of brickwork involves working out the cost of materials like brick, sand, and cement and the cost of labour. The cost of materials, as well as labour charges, varies from place to place. The availability of materials and labour also affects the rates. In this article, we will learn to calculate the cost of brick walls.

Stepwise Calculation for Rate Analysis of Brickwork

Rate analysis is done to determine the probable cost of the work which is to be done. The Estimated cost helps in determining the capital requirement for the work. Rate Analysis of brickwork involved three Steps. First is determining the quantity of material like Bricks, Cement and Sand required. The Second Step is determining the rate and amount of labour required for brickwork.

Calculation of Material for 1 m3 of Brick masonry

In Brick masonry, the material required is Cement, Sand and Bricks. The quantity of these materials is required to be known beforehand. The process of calculation of material for 1 m3 of brick masonry involves determining the quantity of cement in bags, the quantity of sand in m3 and the number of bricks required.

Calculation of Bricks for 1 m3 of Brick masonry

The number of bricks depends on the size of the brick available. As per Indian Standard, the modular bricks have a size of 19 cm x 9cm x 9cm. Non-Modular bricks are available in different sizes. The choice of a particular size also depends on the location. Some States in India use different sizes compared to others. The most commonly used Non-Modular Bricks are 230x110x70 mm. The thickness of the beam is usually kept at 230 mm in India. Thus 230 mm length brick is commonly used.

No matter, what the size of the brick is, you can always calculate the total number of bricks required for 1 m3 of Brick Masonry. In the example shown below, I have calculated the total number of Standard size bricks required for 1 m3 of Brickwork.

  • Standard Size of Bricks with Mortar = 20x10x10 cm (assuming 1 cm of mortar)
  • Number of Bricks in 1 m3 of Brickwork = 1/(0.2*0.1*0.1) =500 Nos.
  • You can also add approx 5% as wastage. Thus total bricks will be 500*1.05 = 525.
  • Likewise, you can calculate the total bricks of sizes 230x110x110 mm, 230x110x70 mm, and 230x110x30 mm.

Calculation of Mortar for 1 m3 of Brick masonry

  • The volume of 1 Brick without mortar = 0.19×0.09×0.09 =0.001539 (taking standard size brick as example)
  • Volume of Bricks in 1 m3 of Brickwork = 500x 0.001539 = 0.7695
  • Volume of Mortar= 1-0.7695 = 0.2305 m3
  • Add 25% extra for Dry volume of a mortar = 0.2305 m3 x 1.25 = 0.288125 m3
  • Add 10% extra for wastage = 0.288125*1.10 =0.316 m3
  • For 10 m3 of Brickwork, the quantity of mortar = 3.16 m3
  • Quantity of Cement and Sand for 10 m3 of Mortar is given below:-
Cement Mortar RatioSumVolume of CementNo. of bags of CementVolume of Sand
Cement Mortar 1:61+6 = 7=(1×3.16)/7= 0.45 m30.45/0.0347 =12.97=(6×3.16)/7=2.71 m3
Cement Mortar 1:51+5 = 6=(1×3.16)/6= 0.53 m30.53/0.0347 =15.27=(5×3.16)/6=2.63 m3
Cement Mortar 1:41+4 = 5=(1×3.16)/5= 0.63 m30.63/0.0347 =18.16=(4×3.16)/5=2.53 m3
Cement Mortar 1:31+3 = 4=(1×3.16)/4= 0.79 m30.79/0.0347 =22.77=(3×3.16)/4=2.37 m3
Cement Mortar 1:21+2 = 3=(1×3.16)/3= 1.05 m31.05/0.0347 =30.26=(2×3.16)/3=2.11 m3
Cement Mortar 1:11+1 = 2=(1×3.16)/2= 1.58 m31.58/0.0347 =1.30 =45.53=(1×3.16)/2=1.58 m3

Calculation of Labour rate for Brickwork

Brickwork Labour rate per m3 for Brickwork can be calculated by knowing the amount of work labour can do in a day. The day for labour is not 24 hours but the day term is referred to as the working hours i.e. 8 hours. So 8 hours of work is counted as a day. The total labour requirement for 1 m3 of brickwork is :

  • 1 Mason can do 1.25 m3 of Brickwork in a day.
    • For 1 m3 of Brickwork, Mason required = 1/1.25 =0.8 Nos.
    • If two Masons i.e. 1st Class and 2nd Class are engaged, the amount of Mason required = 0.8/2 = 0.4 per day
  • 1 Coolie can do 0.7 m3 of Brickwork, for 1 m3 of brickwork = 1/0.7 = 1.43 coolie will be required.
  • 1 Bishti can do 5 m3 of Brickwork in the superstructure. For 1 m3 of Brickwork, no. of Bhishti = 1/5 = 0.20
